Carpentry

The construction industry is a source of innumerable employment opportunities as demand for residential and commercial buildings continue to grow. Whether you are interested in maintenance and repair, renovation, construction or initial planning, you'll build a rewarding and stimulating career when you choose Carpentry as a trade.

What You'll Learn:

Students will learn safe work practices while using hand tools and woodworking machinery to construct, erect and repair buildings and other structures. Students may earn up to 240 hours of the work experience for their first year apprenticeship.

• Use safe work practices and apply safety regulations, read and interpret building plans, use and apply the BC Building Code, use hand tools and operate woodworking machines, describe the characteristics and uses of building materials, use surveying equipment, apply basic joinery techniques when constructing small projects.
• Layout a building site, construct concrete foundation form work, frame floors, walls and roofs, design and install stairs.
• Work in both metric and imperial systems of measurement, apply mathematical principles to the solution of construction problems, develop and value the employability skills necessary to be successful in the workplace.

Program Length:

10 months - Level 1

20 months - Pre-apprenticeship Option - available to Secondary School age students only

Certificate includes:

• Emergency First Aid
• WHMIS
• Hilti (Power Actuated Tools)
• Class 5 Forklift
• Construction Safety Training System

Requirements of the job:

Healthy individuals with good stamina, creative flair, attention to detail, aptitude in basic math skills, good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. A desire to pursue a career in carpentry.

Employment Outlook:

The primary sources of employment are found with building contractors, construction material suppliers, maintenance departments, and self-emploment.
