Automotive Service Technician 1

The demand for highly skilled and well-trained automotive technicians is growing due to advancing technology in the industry. If you are a keen problem solver, highly motivated and are interested in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, choose a career in Automotive Technology.

What You'll Learn:

You will learn workplace safety, tools and equipment; general automotive maintenance; brakes and anti-lock brake systems; steering linkage; suspension; wheel alignment; electrical and electronics repair including scanner use with OBD I and OBD II. All hands on work will be performed and inspected to current automotive industry standards.

Practical Training includes:

• safe work practices
• cutting, welding and brazing
• routine maintenance
• diagnostics
• wheels, hubs, and bearings
• frames and suspension systems
• manual and power steering systems
• brake systems
• gas/diesel engines
• cooling systems
• exhaust systems
• lubricating
• drivelines
• axles and differentials
• basic electrical systems and batteries
• fuel systems
• emission controls
• electronic controls
• clutches
• standard/automatic transmissions and transfer cases
• employability skills and work experience

Program Length:

10 months - Level 1 (includes 240 hours of work experience)

20 months - Pre-apprenticeship Option - available to Secondary School age students only

Certificate includes:

• Entry Level and/or Level 1 Technical Training
• Emergency First Aid
• WHMIS

Requirements of the job:

Healthy individuals with good stamina, creative flair, attention to detail, aptitude in basic math skills, good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. A desire to pursue a career in automotive repair.

Employment Outlook:

Job opportunities exist in a variety of capacities, from forklift mechanic, farm equipment mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, outdoor power equipment technician, recreational vehicles service technician, automotive service technician, commercial transport vehicle mechanic, diesel engine mechanic.
