Continuing Education Student Handbook

Orientation Information for Students (and Parents)
September 2010 - June, 2011

Now that you've enrolled. . .

First, welcome to Riverside Continuing Education! More than anything else, we want you to succeed. We promise to strive to meet your needs and to assist you in every way possible to be successful.

Second, if you have ANY difficulty as you get started in your course, please contact the counsellor for assistance. We always willing to help you solve problems and make smooth your path to success.

Third, if you have ANY problems with your coursework, please discuss these problems with your teacher. If you and the teacher can’t find a solution, contact the principal.

To begin. . .

Once you’ve enrolled:

Your teacher will arrange a meeting or contact you within three days of enrolling. This will give you a chance to ask all the questions you may have about your course.

The teacher will discuss the course expectations, timelines, and give you instructions about the first assignment.

Then, the course materials will be provided to you (in person, electronically and/or by mail where applicable). The first assignment is due two weeks after you receive your course materials.

Our expectations of you. . .

Once you have received your course material, you are expected to submit an assignment within the first two weeks and every two weeks after that unless you have negotiated a different submission schedule with your teacher.

If you are not able to keep up with the work it is up to you to contact the teacher and discuss alternate work, a revised schedule or a different assignment. Our goal is to provide appropriate work at an appropriate pace for you but we can’t do that unless you are communicating your needs to us. Please stay in touch with your teacher.

How it works. . .

If you don’t understand the process for completing and submitting work, please call the teacher for clarification.

When you submit work:

Tests will be written at Riverside Centre. If you are not able to write tests at the arranged site, you must contact the teacher to find out how to arrange to sit an exam.

Getting help. . .

You can call your teacher by phone (604-814-0446) during the school day (typically our teachers are available between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays). Whenever possible you are invited to make an appointment with your teacher for assistance with your course or drop by the Continuing Education Department during the teacher’s hours of work. We also have an Educational Assistant available to work with students who need additional support. The Educational Assistant is available in the main Riverside Centre building from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Consequences for Non-Performance

If you do not submit an assignment every two weeks (unless a different schedule has been arranged), the teacher will contact you (and/or your parents). If there is an unusual or valid circumstance, the teacher will work with you to develop a realistic time-frame for completion of your studies. The teacher may adjust the activities to suit your needs if adjustment is warranted.

If no valid reason is given for not meeting the timeframe, you will be placed on “academic probation” and given one week to submit the expected assignment/test. A letter will be sent to you (and/or your parents) on the day the academic probation is imposed.

If work is not submitted within the following week, you will be withdrawn from the course and the course materials must be returned within the next four weeks.

If you wish to re-enroll in the course, you will be assessed a $100.00 deposit, fully refundable upon completion of the course.

Note: A student remains on probation for a month. If you meet the minimum schedule for assignment completion, the probation is lifted. If you do not meet that requirement, you will be withdrawn from the course.

Report Cards
Report cards will be issued by Riverside Centre four times during the school year along with informal reports as required by School District and Ministry of Education policy and procedure.

Additional resources available through School District No. 75
School age students attending Riverside Continuing Education have access to School District No. 75 support services and resources such as counseling, school psychologists, speech pathologists, and the district ESL teacher. To access these services, please contact one of our counsellors who will take your request forward to the administration.

Credit through Equivalency and Course Challenge
Secondary students may gain course credit towards graduation though the equivalency and course challenge process. Academic credit can be given for a wide range of external coursework related to talent, skills, training, and experience.
